Horse Rider Physiotherapy
Why Rider Bio-mechanics Assessments?
Becky has trained with leading human equestrian athlete Physiotherapist (TeamGB and United States Equestrian Federation), Andy Thomas, in the assessment and management of horse riders, along with specific Pilates exercise training for equestrians.
Through this additional training, Becky has unique assessment skills for evaluating imbalances and weaknesses which cause many riding issues and can lead to pain and poor performance in the saddle.
Rider Bio-mechanics Assessment:
This assessment is centred on you and aims to identify YOUR riding weaknesses and imbalances.
Why should we do this? Consider for example your performance, do you:
If any to the above examples apply to you then a personal plan could help you correct any rider muscle imbalance which may be causing this – after all riding is a game of symmetry!
Following the assessment, a comprehensive rehabilitation/exercise plan will be built for you. Additional treatments can then be provided at the clinic, as required.
Remember, a balanced rider = a balanced horse!

- Fix one arm in towards the whithers?
- Prefer to turn in one direction?
- Find lateral work easier on one rein than the other?
- Have too much weight in one part of the saddle?
- Always run out to the same side?
- Fall behind the movement?
- Have constant back pain?
- Have uneven wear on your equipment; boots, gloves?

How can physiotherapy help?
This assessment is specific to horse riders and importantly YOUR performance in the saddle. We will identify any weaknesses and restrictions that ARE having an impact on your performance in the saddle.
How many appointments will I need?
Usually there will be one ridden assessment, where your restrictions will be identified and addressed. You will be given specific exercises to address the findings of the assessment. From here, you can come to clinic as a usual physiotherapy patient for any ongoing manual treatment, as required.
Is there anything I need to do before hand?
Please have your horse in and ready to be ridden for the time of the assessment.
What happens during the appointment?
We will look at you ride, nothing too strenuous, walk, trot (including some sitting trot) on a straight line and circle, if you are able to some Canter and/or movements you find difficult. During this we will simply observe your posture in the saddle (you will be able to ride in one of the Visualise Jackets) and we will take some images to show you, talk through and compare to the end of the session.
We then get you off the horse and provide a more traditional physio examination. You may then receive some treatment, before getting back on to assess the differences in before/after treatment.
You will then be given ongoing exercises to address/maintain/improve the issues found.

Will I have to do anything after the appointment?
Your exercises!
Although this may sound arduous now and horse riders are the worst at looking after themselves (!), but the exercises will be very specific to your individual needs (and not too many to put you off completing them!), and we will advise that you complete them prior to getting in the saddle – to warm up yourself and optimise your performance – just like we warm up our horses!
